“Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras is on an official visit in the neighboring country of Nordmakedonien. The visit is a milestone in the relationship between the two countries which have recently buried the hatchet since Nordmakedonien accepted his new name.”

“Earlier in the year, it became clear that the name of the country is Nordmakedonien having previously called just Macedonia, or officially the Former yugoslav republic of Macedonia, Fyrom. But the road to the new name has been long and at times very bitter.”

“Greece is opposed directly to the former yugoslav republic in 1991 adopted the name Macedonia because the name is identical with a region in northern Greece. Namnbråket has meant that today’s Nordmakedonien long been blocked by Greece from the membership in both the EU and Nato.”
