Alexander Doom: The Rising Star of Belgian Athletics
Where are the limits of Alexander Doom’s potential? After winning two indoor world titles (400m and 4x400m), the 27-year-old Belgian athlete crowned himself as the European champion in the 400 meters yesterday. According to athletics journalist Maarten Vangramberen, “With the time he ran in the final, he belongs to the absolute world top.”
From one success to another, Alexander Doom has emerged as one of the strongest athletes in Belgium and beyond in recent months. His recent European title was not unexpected, as Vangramberen points out. It demonstrates the reputation and success Doom has built for himself.
“He was the top favorite. None of the other finalists had run faster than him. But there are always top favorites who falter when it truly matters, when all the spotlights are on them.”
“And what a story it is. Less than a year ago, he was considering retirement. Eventually, he chose to continue. Clearly a good choice: he became world indoor champion in March and now European champion.”
In a short amount of time, Doom has amassed an impressive list of achievements. “To put it into perspective how historical this is: only 6 Belgian men have ever won gold at a European Championship,” Vangramberen notes.
“With the time he ran in the final – a truly top time, that Belgian record of 44.15, he would have won bronze at the previous Games.”
“The sport is constantly evolving, even in athletics. So in Paris, the times will be even faster, but who’s to say Doom can’t become even faster himself?”
Vangramberen believes that Doom should adjust his goals. “He has always said, ‘I am aiming for a medal in Paris, but in the relay teams.’ With the mixed relay or the Tornados, for example.”
“He should start moving away from that now, because with the time he ran today, he is among the absolute world elite. In Paris, he will definitely be flirting with an Olympic medal himself.”
