Bet won for Gabriel Attal. By announcing the ban on the abaya a few days before the start of the school year – thus placing himself on the front of the stage – the Minister of National Education appointed last July can boast of having made a successful start. This is revealed by the Odoxa-Backbone Consulting survey carried out for Le Figaro, which also underlines that three quarters of French people (74%) support this measure.
The first steps of the youngest of Macronie rue de Grenelle – after having already passed through the Secretary of State for Youth, the spokesperson of the government, and the Ministry Delegate for Public Accounts -, therefore have the merit of deciding with those of his predecessor. By his recent outings, the elected official from Hauts-de-Seine has won the congratulations of the Head of State, but also the confidence of one in two French people (49%), or eleven points more than Pap Ndiaye. in the same era.
His recent outings have allowed him to be an identified face of the executive, which is also proving to be politically divisive. Despite his socialist origins, Gabriel Attal is now mainly supported by the right, 76% of whose supporters say they have a good opinion of him. Unlike the Nupes, which expresses much more distrust towards it: whether it is socialist voters (61%), ecologists (70%) or rebels (82%).
Despite his successful return, the minister remains expected, particularly by the left, on the numerous issues he will have to tackle. Starting with improving the “level of reading, writing and calculations in primary school”. On this question, barely more than 4 in 10 French people (46%) believe in his abilities. Ditto for the progress on “the security of establishments”, “the autonomy of establishment heads” and “the level of mathematics of secondary students” (42%). “But more than 40% confidence in being effective on these objectives is not so bad, all his predecessors having broken their teeth on these subjects and not having managed to convince the French of their effectiveness in these areas,” observes Gaël Sliman, president of Odoxa.

For the rest, the minister’s announcements are well received. Whether it is the ban on the abaya or the reinstatement of the baccalaureate specialty tests at least in June, respectively supported by 74% and 76% of citizens. The objective of “making the fight against bullying at school an absolute priority” also has consensus (88%), as does the desire, to a lesser extent, to experiment with uniforms or unique outfits at school. school (63%). “Let us note, however, that on this last subject, as with the ban on the abaya, that those most directly concerned, that is to say the parents and especially the students themselves, are clearly more circumspect,” says notice Gaël Sliman.
Finally, the image of Gabriel Attal is generally positive. The minister is hailed as “courageous”, “sympathetic” and “competent” by six out of ten French people. In a government long criticized for being too technical, the Macronist is also perceived as a “real” politician. With the faults that can be associated with it, namely being “ambitious” (80%) but above all “not sincere” (51%). Its weak points are also found among the younger generations – students and parents -, fewer of whom favor it than the seniors.
