Ard Huizinga from Zuidhorn received a pleasant surprise: he is one of the two winners of a contest held by radio station 3 FM. His painting of a willow tree (Colorful Days) will be displayed at the Groninger Museum this summer. On Monday, he brought the artwork to the museum, where it will be hung on Tuesday. Huizinga expressed his disbelief and joy at this opportunity, stating that he never imagined this would happen to him.
His wife informed him in mid-May about the competition organized by the 3FM program Wijnand in the Morning, inviting artists – from beginners to professionals – to submit a photo of their best work. The winner would have their work displayed at the Groninger Museum for the summer. To his surprise, Huizinga was chosen as one of the winners. He started painting only a year ago as a way to relax, and it has been a stress-free hobby for him.
Huizinga attends painting classes in Groningen once a week and has created around forty paintings so far. His workspace is filled with his artwork, some finished and some still in progress. The painting of the willow tree is carefully packed and taken to the museum, where Huizinga receives a certificate of receipt for his artwork. The museum has prepared a plaque with information about Ard and his work to accompany the painting, which he will take home after the summer.
Inspired by the works of the artists’ association De Ploeg, Huizinga’s painting will be displayed next to pieces from this collective in the museum. He is thrilled to have his work showcased alongside Johan Dijkstra’s, considering it a great honor.
