Today, the city of Ghent, in collaboration with Proximus, is launching the Lens on Ghent app. This smartphone app allows you to explore old Ghent using augmented reality. By pointing your phone at historical sites or buildings in Ghent, you can see how they looked in the past. Along with the 3D images, you will also hear the story of the building or place’s former function. The app is being launched in a test phase today and will be available for free starting next week.
Bram Van Braeckevelt, the Green party’s alderman for Tourism in Ghent, believes that the app will add significant value for people who want to discover or rediscover historical points of interest in a different way. He personally has always been curious about how things were in the past and thinks the app provides a better way to experience that now.
The new app is not just for tourists; it is also intended to help residents of Ghent learn more about their own city. Sami Souguir, the Open Vld party’s alderman for Culture in Ghent, mentioned that many locals are unaware of the history behind certain places in the city. For example, he highlighted the Maternity Hospital, where many Ghent residents were born, and the Winter Circus, which used to accommodate up to 3400 people and even elephants in the early 1940s.
