Nationwide, students are having to pay more and more money for a room in a shared flat. This is the result of a study published on Wednesday by the Moses Mendelssohn Institute (MMI) in cooperation with the real estate portal WG-gesucht.de. A room currently costs an average of EUR 458 per month – EUR 44 more than a year ago.
Rent is most expensive in Munich (720 euros), followed by Berlin (640 euros). For their survey, the MMI and WG-Gesucht evaluated 94 university locations with at least 5000 students. Market observation has been carried out since 2013.
In Hamburg, the rent for a shared room rose to an average of 570 euros – that is 70 euros or 14 percent more than a year ago. Ten years ago, a shared room in Hamburg cost an average of 400 euros.
Rents also rose in Frankfurt am Main (580 euros) and Cologne (550 euros). Only in a few cities, such as Lübeck (410 euros), did they remain constant.
According to the managing director of the Moses Mendelssohn Institute, Stefan Brauckmann, the increase is mainly due to higher energy costs. He urged additional financial support for students who are not living with their parents. “In more and more cities, it now takes the full salary of a mini-job, 520 euros, to bear the housing costs,” said Brauckmann.
