As in every election in Germany, the Federal Agency for Civic Education surveyed the parties standing for election and compiled their projects and positions on 38 topics.

The parliamentary elections in Berlin will take place on February 12, 2023. The vote will decide who will govern the capital in the coming five-year legislative period.

The SPD won the election in Berlin on September 26, 2021, at the same time as the federal elections, clearly ahead of the Greens and the CDU. She again formed a red-red-green government with the Greens and the Left.

However, there were massive irregularities and faulty processes in the conduct of the election due to the simultaneous referendum on the expropriation of large housing groups and the Berlin marathon. In November 2022, the constitutional court in Berlin then declared the elections to the House of Representatives and the district assemblies to be invalid.

33 parties are taking part in the re-election for the House of Representatives with state or district lists, one fewer than in the 2021 election. Around 2.5 million citizens are entitled to vote.

The Wahl-O-Mat for this year’s election in Berlin was developed by the Federal Agency for Civic Education. In cooperation with young and first-time voters, a list of questions was drawn up containing 38 theses on central questions of Berlin state politics. The parties standing for election were then asked to comment on the individual theses.

Users of the Wahl-O-Mats can click on “agree”, “disagree” or “neutral” for each individual thesis and ultimately decide on a maximum of eight parties that should be taken into account in the evaluation.

The Wahl-O-Mat then calculates which party is closest to the voter and shows the individual positions of the parties for each thesis.

The result of the Wahl-O-Mats is not a specific election recommendation, but only shows which parties you have the greatest agreement with – and which parties have the least agreement with say individual theses. This function of the Wahl-O-Mats also helps you to become more familiar with the election programs and thus to make a decision for the state election.
