Legend has it that one of the four giants who set foot in the land we now call Australia, and stood in the lands of the Gunditjmara. And it turned into a volcano: Budj Bim. In the aboriginal language, means “high head” and the lava, erupted from his mouth, always according to the story handed down, were his teeth. But it is not just a legend. Geology, archaeology and myth, in fact, meet in the wastelands wetlands of the state of Victoria. And this may be the most ancient history ever handed down until now, because founded on a truth: the Gunditjmara were there when the volcano was born, almost 40 thousand years ago. The most ancient of the Humerus. From myth to stone The Gunditjmara live in those areas for at least 13,000 years. But there are clues that place them in the region 20,000 years before. The main one: an axe found in the ’40s buried under the volcanic rocks brought by the eruption of the volcano Tower Hill, which is about 40 kilometres from Budj Bim. The dating of the rocks was critical, both volcanoes were formed about 37,000 years ago. It is a simple assumption is logical and almost a dogma, that in archaeology and in geology is a few exceptions: what is below is previous to that which is above. Then the stone axe had to belong to the peoples who were already present at the time of the eruptions. And they saw the”high head” up from the Ground.
Australia, there is truth in the legend of the volcano: perhaps the earliest story ever told
